Nobody says it better than Comedy Central. Rock on, Stephen.

For months, Colbert has been promoting a trip overseas to visit troops and shoot episodes of The Colbert Report on location in the Middle East, but claimed that national security regulations kept him from saying exactly when he would go or where he would be filming. Well, the countdown clock that once read “? Days” till the Persian Gulf can now be set to zero.

US comedian Stephen Colbert has arrived in Iraq for a week to record special editions of his popular television show “The Colbert Report,” the US army confirmed on Saturday.

Colbert’s trip is dubbed “Operation Iraqi Stephen: Going Commando” in reference to the Operation Iraqi Freedom codename given to the 2003 US-led invasion of the country.

“The USO counts this as military service, right?” Colbert said in a statement on the Comedy Central website. “I might want to run for office some day.”

The week of shows will supposedly feature a guest appearance by Alaska Governor Sarah Palin, who spilled the beans about her “surprise” appearance last week on her Twitter. Colbert has several interviews scheduled with important political and military officials, including General Ray Odierno and the Deputy Prime Minister of Iraq, Barham Saleh. Here’s hoping they’ll be as amusingly uncomfortable as we’ve come to expect from the fake political pundit.

Proceeds from the iTunes sales of these special episodes of The Colbert Report will benefit the USO.

Fake political pundit Stephen Colbert may not have a module of the International Space Station named after him, but he’s not doing too shabby. In his seemingly endless quest to cover the world (and even outer space) with objects named after him, the students at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse have done Colbert a solid and christened their eagle mascot “Colbert.”

More than 3,100 students participated in the vote. The results were announced Friday.

Colbert received 44 percent of the votes, followed by Ernie with 14 percent and Edgar and Screech with 11 percent each.A Comedy Central spokesman said the fake political pundit wouldn’t comment on the honor.The university of 10,000 originally chose the name Eddie. But the National Rifle Association said it trademarked that name for its gun-safety mascot.

Who needs a room in the space station when you’ve got your own college mascot? Now there’s a legacy.

Also.. .the NRA has a mascot? Named Eddie? You know I couldn’t let that one go without further investigation, so here’s a picture of NRA Eddie with what is either a gun safety slogan for kids or advice about what Natlie Portman should do the next time she sees Sean Penn.

Stephen Colbert has donated his birthday this year to DonorsChoose.org. This is an organization the Evil Beet is very involved with — you might recall the promotion we ran last fall where you, the Evil Beet readers, KICKED SOME ASS and donated a ton of money to fund educational projects in low-income school districts. I was passionate about it then and I still am. There is NO REASON why the children in ALL our schools shouldn’t have access to the materials that will help them learn. If the government won’t fork over the money, then it’s our responsibility as private citizens to ensure that all our children in all our schools have the best possible opportunity to learn. Tonight my husband, Stephen Colbert, will be hosting A Colbert Christmas on Comedy Central at 10pmEST/PT & 9/C.  Guests include Toby Keith, Willie Nelson, John Legend, Elvis Costello and Jon Stewart.

As much as I worship Colbert, I’m not feeling too confident about this.  I hope the rest of the show is an improvement from this clip which is positively cringe-worthy despite the crazy laughing audience…who are those people?  Comedy Central has high hopes for this special though.  It premieres tonight and is available this Tuesday on DVD.

This is a much better way to make young people realize how absurd it is not to vote than, say, muzzling Jessica Alba. Don’t get me wrong; I’m a huge proponent of muzzling Jessica Alba. I just don’t think it’ll do much to increase votership among the youth demographic. That doesn’t mean we shouldn’t use public funds to do it, though.

On January 7, with the rest of the late-night crew. It seems Comedy Central put some pressure on them to do this, as they’ve released the following (hilarious) joint statement:

“We would like to return to work with our writers. If we cannot, we would like to express our ambivalence, but without our writers we are unable to express something as nuanced as ambivalence.”

Maybe they can’t express ambivalence, but they can sure still be damn funny.

The WGA’s all pissed, of course, and released the following retort:

“Comedy Central forcing Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert back on the air will not give the viewers the quality shows they’ve come to expect. The only way to get the writing staffs back on the job is for the AMPTP companies to come back to the table prepared to negotiate a fair deal with the Writers Guild.”

I’m really really interested to see how these shows fare sans writers. Stewart and Colbert are genuinely funny guys, and writers themselves, but can they hold down an entire show without help?

We’re gonna find out, kids.

Congrats to Stephen Colbert, who, although he won’t be President next year, was selected Celebrity of the Year by newspaper editors and broadcast producers who said Colbert had the biggest impact on pop culture in 2007.

First runner-up was J.K. Rowling, followed by Al Gore.

Colbert sent the AP this email: “In receiving this award, I am pleased that I was chosen over two great spinners of fantasy — J.K. Rowling and Al Gore. It is truly an honor to be named the Associated Press’ Celebrity of the Year. Best of all, this makes me the official front-runner for next year’s Drug-Fueled Downward Spiral of the year. P.S. Look for my baby bump this spring!”

“Although I lost by the slimmest margin in presidential election history — only 10 votes — I have chosen not to put the country through another agonizing Supreme Court battle. It is time for this nation to heal.”

Stephen Colbert, whose request to run in the 2008 presidential election was barred by the South Carolina Democratic Executive Council, which voted last week to keep the host of “The Colbert Report” off the state’s primary ballot. The vote was 13-3.
