Nelly Furtado is Back and She’s Still Awesome (But Now She’s El Awesomo)

November 9th, 2009 by molls

Nelly Furtado’s video for her new single came out today and it’s definitely worth checking out. Nelly’s singing in Spanish on this joint, and even though I can’t understand a thing she’s saying, it’s still just as fun to listen to as some of her older hits. The video itself is boring at times, but trust me, you’ll want to stick in for the twist ending. I think beside singing in Spanish, Nelly is also taking cues from telenovelas.

Ive liked Nelly since she first came out – she has a very laid back style and somehow seems to avoid all the Hollywood drama..we’ve never seen her acting like a crazy crackasaurus like some of these other chicks.

Im impressed she learned Spanish and further, thought to do an album in Spanish…I’ll be checking it out.

She didn’t learn spanish – her parents were Portuguese immigrants to Canada… Spanish is one of the three languages she grew up speaking! I’m more surprised that it’s taken her until now to do a spanish album! I’ve always loved her voice!

In fact Portuguese is one of the languages she grew up speaking. Portuguese and Spanish are not the same, although they have a lot in common and usually Portuguese and Spanish people can easily understand each other.
Give her credit for singing an album in Spanish!

Err… no. I lived with two Portuguese girls and I couldn’t understand a word they were saying. If I read Portuguese I’ll catch the general idea, but that’s about everything.

      • Sass says:

NO, this isnt true. In fact, she grew up speaking Portugese – and in a (not so long ago) interview that I watched, she said that she had started learning Spanish so that she could do a Spanish album.

Portugese and Spanish are not similar in any way.

And I know this because Im fluent in Spanish.

Sweetheart, Portugal and Spain are different countries. Trust me, I’m Spanish. Nelly has the thickest Portuguese accent when singing in Spanish, not nice.

    She can’t sing for shit.

Hmmm.. If that’s really the official version, they’re gonna have to fire the PA that did the transfer. That’s a 16:9 image squished into a 4:3 frame, yeech!

  5. momster says:

Umm…I’m also wondering what the twist ending was/is. And she looks like Courtney Cox’s younger sister in this video – doesn’t she?

  6. Maluca says:

    Twist ending?

Was that a ploy to get people to watch the video or something?

  7. Az says:

My favorite Nelly Furtado song is a duet with Juanes called “Fotografía”. In Spanish obvs.

  8. Diana says:

I love her with James Morrison’s “Broken Strings”

  9. raquelabeta says:

Does singing in Spanish mean her song has to suck? Don’t get me wrong, I love Spanish language pop (was a huge fan of Reik for awhile), but this is downhill from her English language music.

    “Truth please, por favor..”

You do realize that means “truth please, please” right?
