Really?

I don’t know how to tell you guys this, so I’m just going to say it:  James Franco has joined the cast of General Hospital and not just for a one-off.  He’ll be on this show this fall in a role that has a “lengthy story arc”.

I’m confused.  I thought the phases of development were supposed to go something like:  waiter, extra, soap star/celebrity game show contestant, movie star.  Franco has been nominated for Golden Globes.  He’s been in movies, good movies.  Now he’s elected to be on a show that once did a story line that involved a weather machine that threatened to freeze everyone on Earth.

Even the EP of GH knows that there’s something wrong with this, stating that it’s “an honor that an actor of Franco’s caliber would choose to spend some of his valuable time in Port Charles.”  Yeah, an honor and a fucking mystery.

what?! there is no way. maybe it’s confused and it’s a movie version of General Hospital. OK, even that would be terrible. This can not be true. Isn’t he supposed to be in college or something?

  2. Alzaetia says:

    what the hell?!

  3. sam says:

I read that it’s because it’s in research for a movie he’s doing

  4. skeelo says:

Strange that James Franco would want to do this. But he can probably film an entire (semi-lucrative) multi-episode arc of a soap opera in like a week.

  5. NicDaMone says:

He looks a little bit like John Mayer in this picture.

  6. jedimaster says:

why does there need to be a reason? Maybe it was something he wanted to do …..

  7. Dizz says:

I didn’t think it was possible to make James Franco look ugly-but this picture proved me wrong.

  8. kt says:

this is one of the weirder celeb stories ive heard in a while.

  9. Reno says:

The only explanation I can think of is that this must be a financial decision. All these celebrities live as if the money will never stop rolling in (which for some is true). Maybe he is keen on the idea of a regular paycheck for a period of time….we all gots to pay those bills! Too bad he didn’t switch to gay porn instead of a soap opera….now that is something I would have watched, LOL!!!

Note to self: Start watching/DVRing G.H. again this fall for the first time since Rick Springfield was on it in the 80’s.

    I don’t care why he’s there…just that he’s THERE! *sighs* :-)

A step down but he’s hardly a star.

I wouldn’t say someone who’s been called “the next James Dean” is hardly a star.

      • DanTheMan says:

“the next” means he isn’t there yet.

He’s been around nearly a decade and his biggest success has been as a supporting character in a superhero movie. No one bothers going to most of the movies he stars in.

not true. he was in freaks and geeks, milk, pineapple express, etc. and he has like 3 or 4 films coming out soon. check out his filmography on imdb.com

          • DanTheMan says:

True. Milk was another supporting role and was a box office dud. Pineapple Express was a minor hit.

Most of the movies he STARS in make less than $20 million.

As far as his box office draw, Pineapple Express is the exception, Flyboys is the rule.

you forgot spiderman and high times my dear ;-)

          • DanTheMan says:

Referenced Spiderman above. By High Times do you mean Pineapple Express? If not, imdb forgot it too.

Like I said, besides a superhero movie, he’s only been in one minor hit, the rest of his movies were all bombs, especially the ones where he was the star.

some people just can’t be happy unless someone makes millions upon millions. I guaruntee that if you show most people a picture of him, they would know who he is. He has had plenty of fans ever since Freaks & Geeks & was nominated for numerous awards for his portrayal of James Dean back when made for cable movies rarely got nominated for anything. Someone’s box office draw doesn’t make them a star, there are plenty of othr factors.

I have never seen that show, but I may have to start watching it..he is just do damn sexy. *sigh*

  13. daniwho says:

I LOVE this story. Way to shake things up Mr. Franco. He clearly has been cast as ugly, nerdy guy who will become hot…. I was thinking this was for research or he just decided soaps would be more fun. Either way, I love that he’s swimming against the current.

  14. piedlourde says:

Put down the bong, Mr. Franco. It’s messed yo mind up, brah!

  15. Klipper says:

WTF? He must owe back taxes.

  16. ash says:

Actors have very unreliable careers. He’s either not being shown scripts, or at least, scripts that he’s interested in following through with. And, heck! What if he’s even excited about doing the show? It could be an interesting role for him. Lots of successful actors fade into obscurity because their egos won’t allow for them to do something smaller than what they feel they have worked up towards. I think it’s a good sign of his character, that he’s willing to work on something smaller than he has before. Or, you know, a sign of logic. Those expenses won’t pay for themselves.

  17. SNK says:

Wow…I never would have thought I woud find him unattractive, but this pic did it.

  18. Megan says:

Really? I love this pic of him!

  19. rayne says:

Sir Ian Mackellan (sp?) did a stint on Coronation Street a few years back as a con man.
