Only in LA could OJ Simpson brutally murder two people and not serve time. Only in LA could Robert Blake kill the mother of his child and not serve time. Only in LA could Rebecca Gayheart kill a nine-year-old jaywalker and not serve any time. Only in LA could Brandy kill a mother of two and not serve time. Only in LA could Lori Petty get drunk, hit a kid on his skateboard and not serve time. (Who did I miss?) I wanna move to LA. — land of the free.
Lori Petty — you may know her from Point Break or A League of Their Own — was arrested in May for driving while under the influence. Not only was she drunk, but she whacked into a skateboarding kid. Thankfully, his injuries were minor. She’s scheduled to enter a no contest plea tomorrow in court. Oh, and the deal? It’s already been hashed out. Petty will serve five years’ probation and a second DUI charge that was filed against her will be dropped.
Fame, even D-list fame, is apparently the ticket to freedom. If Lori Petty were a random housewife living in Sioux Falls, she’d be getting three hots and a cot right about now.

Oh, THANK YOU. Honestly, I’m an avid reader of EB (Wendie!!) and a blogger myself. I REFUSED to do a blog about Ted. Instead, I posted one about the passing of Dominick Dunne, the writer who wasn’t a fan of the Kennedy clan and their ability to be “above the law”.
At least Dominick died several hours AFTER Ted.
I’m old enough to remember all that Mary Jo Kopeckne tragedy. He got OFF.
And, since we’re now talking about politics rather than Hollywood, let’s not forget Laura Bush.

Actually, that kind of sentencing is pretty common, regardless of the person (unless someone gets killed, of course). Quite often when you read about a drunk driver hitting and killing someone, it’s usually not the first time they’ve done it.

Rebecca Gayheart shouldn’t be placed in the same category as OJ or Blake.

The only reason Brandy hit someone with her car is because someone hit her first. I.E., totally not her fault.
Exactly. If someone runs into Brandy and she runs into someone else, it’s still Brandy’s fault (because she has money)? Where does she need to be in the chain of events before she’s faultless, the third car, the second? Don’t drag Brandy into your examples.
That’s true. Brandy was hit from behind, and the momentum from that crash made her crash. Oh, and she was sober, too.
Failing to leave enough of a gap to manoeuvre or brake when hit from behind does make you at fault in an accident – that’s driving 101 people.
But regardless Brandy had a high speed accident and she was the one who “hit” the other car from behind. She felt at the time that she caused it and has accepted civil responsibility even though there was insufficient evidence to prove criminal responsibility.
Wendie, get your facts straight. Brandy was not at fault for that accident!

I hit a kid on a bike once in a school zone when he flew through the crosswalk without even so much as a glance. I was 16, and I was only going oh…about 8mph, maybe? He was perfectly fine, with zero scrapes and bruises….and I got off the hook. Maybe it helped that I was bawling like crazy?
The fact that she was drunk changes things, though.
