Queen Latifah Loves Herself
June 26th, 2009 by WendieAfter years of struggling with her body image issues, Queen Latifah has come to a place of acceptance regarding her curves. As she tells it, a chance encounter with a driver changed her perspective:
I was in Utah for the Sundance Film Festival. I was at the airport and the limo driver told me about his 12-year-old daughter, who wanted to be a singer and had a beautiful voice. However, her classmates were teasing her about her body and telling her she was never going to make it.
She saw me perform on TV and I inspired her to sing again. She saw me and my appearance and my success and the great job I did. This was a 12-year-old kid whose dream had been halted by negative comments, but she saw me deliver a knock-out performance and it made her believe she could become successful too.
Well, Queen, it’s awesome that you’ve found a way to accept yourself. But it prompts me to ask: Why do you hawk weight-loss products?
Before you leave a comment, please make sure you've read our Guide to Commenting. It could save you a great deal of embarrassment.

because it’s healthier. she is in great shape now, but remember what she used to look like? all she is saying is to appreciate what you have and be comfortable and accept yourself, but that does not mean you should live an unhealthy lifestyle; remember, being overweight isn’t ONLY about appearances.
It’s kind of like asking why beautiful women hawk makeup and beauty products. She has slimmed down, albeit not as much as she would have liked. And I’m sure the money doesn’t hurt.
How do you know how much she wanted to slim down?
She admitted in an interview that she wanted to be slimmer than what she ended up after using weight loss products. Thats how.
Well, all right then.
If i remember correctly, queen latifah would talk about becoming healthier, not being thinner. Exercising and eating right can be about improving the quality of life and living longer, not just about fitting into a smaller dress size.
Yes, Ms. Potato Head (I’ve never written THAT before), that is exactly right. She does not stress numbers on a scale but rather on making healthy food choices for her wellbeing. I don’t think we will ever have her photo her on this website where we are all commenting “OMG! Does Queen have an eating disorder? Eat something, girlfriend! We can see your ribs! You don’t have to look like Lindsay!” Nope. Never gonna happen.
Exactly! I loved the tone of those ads. Thought they were fantastic. They made it about being comfortable in your size but acknoledging that one need to make healthier choices like eating well and exercising.
That was her whole tag line : “To be a size healthier.” She never said she needed to be supermodel skinny or anything, just healthy.
She looks really good in this picture.
I love her, she rocks :)))
wow! she looks gorgeous here
wendie, for real man, quit hating. all of your posts are so nasty lately. there was absolutely nothing in that quote that said she changed her perspective. all the comments are absolutely right, she has always touted being healthy and never touted being thin. her perspective is the same as it always was. using weight loss products to not be morbidly obese does not mean you have to lose your curves. using weight loss products to achieve a healthy body weight for your height does not mean you have to lose your curves.
I’ve always thought she was beautiful and quite talented. She rocks. :)
um, because she wanted to be aalittle bit healthier? duh.
