They frequently will allow pre-trial detainees to go on trips to visit close relatives that might die. Why? Because if he's found innocent and his detention caused him to miss being with his mother when she died, or causes him to miss her funeral, he'll sue everyone involved. It's cheaper just to let him be with her then to defend/settle the lawsuit. Nope, they probably let him out because a) he hasn’t been convicted yet and b) she’s really sick.
