Glamour Casts Starlets as American Icons

A lot of these girls are iconic in and of themselves already, but Glamour dressed them up and posed them as female icons of long-ago (okay, okay, mostly the ’80s) for a new photo spread.

I’ve listed the names of the starlets and the icons they’re posing as after the jump, so that you can try to guess for yourself if you want.

You can get more info on each of these photos and the women being portrayed here at Glamour’s site.

Lindsay Lohan as Madonna
Camilla Belle as Mary Tyler Moore
Emma Stone as Carrie Bradshaw
Emma Roberts as Audrey Hepburn
Alexis Bledel as Rosie the Riveter
America Ferrera as Dolores Huerta
Alicia Keys as Michelle Obama
Elisha Cuthbert as Brandi Chastain
Hayden Panettiere as Amelia Earhart
Paula Patton as Billie Holiday
Chanel Iman as Althea Gibson
Odette Yustman, Spencer Grammer and Rumer Willis as the women of Woodstock

Wait… Carrie Bradshaw… like sex and the city??
How the hell is she an american icon.

    • Persistent Cat says:

      Fashion.

      • Abbi says:

I don’t see her as a fashion icon whatsoever.
I’m sure they could have picked an actual fashion icon. Instead of a character from a shitty television show.

      • Persistent Cat says:

A lot of people would disagree.

Mary Tyler Moore is there as well and she was one hell of an icon, fashion and for the woman’s movement.

      • Abbi says:

Mary tyler moore is not from a SHITTY television show.
They key word being shitty, i thought folks would be able to distinguish and didn’t think it was necessary to go further. Carrie Bradshaw has no business being on such a narrow list… Maybe if it was like out of 100 women I could see it. There are so many strong female icons that would be more suited for this list than her.

I didn’t even know who she WAS until I googled it.

      • Anonymous says:

if you don’t know who she is, you obviously didn’t watch the show, so how do you even know that it is shitty?

      • JennB says:

Abbi: I find it funny that you didn’t even know who Carrie Bradshaw was until you googled her, yet you have such strong opinions on the show. Speaking of that, ever hear of this word: “opinions.” Many would beg to differ with you that “S&TC” was a shitty show. Just saying, your opinion isn’t the only one that counts…

    • briana says:

oh deff Carrie Bradshaw is an icon!

  2. Doe says:

This seems like something from America’s Next Top Model.

  3. Diana says:

Wow, i really love this shoot!

  4. Anonymous says:

i didnt even realize that was lindsay
she looks rlly thin, not like herself… and not good

  5. trixie says:

    lindsay is the best!!!

  6. V says:

    I’m so…confused.

  7. jolene says:

i was about to say that this girl looked a lot like Linds.

  8. Shan says:

That black dress/coat combo is to die for! That is beautiful! Back in the day women were classy, stunning and drop dead sexy. All in one. Now most are kind of jeez… what were they thinking?

    • Persistent Cat says:

Isn’t it? I’d wear that every day, even if I wasn’t leaving the house, it’s just too lovely.

I want to fix her feet though.

  9. Yeayea says:

Excuse me but please can you explain to me how you say these are “female icons of long-ago (okay, okay, MOSTLY the ’80s)”???

Madonna is pretty much the only one i would call an icon of the 80’s.

Last i checked Moore, Hepburn, Huerta, Holiday, Earhart and rosie were all icons well before the that time, while Obama and Chastain were after.

BEET please could you do a ‘Daily Chanel’

    for Chanel Iman.

    PLEEEEAAASSEEE x

  11. ricardo says:

so lindsay is really into the whole channeling famous icons thing…

  12. charlie_laine says:

oh man, I thought it was Bijou Philips in the Madonna photo

  13. Jo says:

these are fun, but that “women of woodstock one” looks like a lame jeans ad. i like america ferrera as dolores huerta best.

  14. HeadbandWhore says:

Where’s Alice Paul? Elizabeth Cady Stanton? Susan B Anthony? Jackie O? Sally K Ride? Eleanor Roosevelt?

When depicting American women icons, I would much rather be shown one of these amazing women before Madonna or Carrie Bradshaw or the women of woodstock.

Although kudos for Rosie the Riveter, Dolores Huerta, and Amelia Earhart

    • Missou says:

Thank you! That’s just what I was thinking!

I guess it’s because in this celebrity-obsessed society, flash always wins over substance. Most people don’t even know who Alice Paul is, but Carrie Bradshaw? Sure – she’s that shallow, self-absorbed shoe fanatic who ploughed through men like a hooker with a BOGO special! What’d Alice Paul do, anyway? Just something about getting women the right to vote… or something…

I also think it’s a little premature to include Michele Obama in this list as an “icon”. Talk to me in four years.

  15. Oxymoron says:

Okay so I recognized like, five of them. Fail.

  16. AmeLia says:

As an Amelia, I’m a little offended to be represented by Hayden Penittiere

  17. Heatherlyisaverb says:

Carrie Bradshaw? I thought that fictional characters could be iconic, but not really ‘icons’. Why not add Scarlett O’Hara, Pippi Longstocking and Elle Woods?

  18. Lizbeth says:

America as Dolores = my fave!
second fave = Alexis as Rosie

This was a great idea! But I agree, the icons are all over the place as far as decades.

  19. angelfish says:

America’s was AMAZING! Love it. Also the soccer one.

  20. Jennifer says:

I am bored to death will all things Lindsay Lohan. She isn’t remotely interesting even in a trainwreck sort of way. Ugh. Cut your hair short, get plastic surgery or OD already.

  21. JennB says:

Yay for Alexis! She kind of came out of left field for this, but I <3 her.

  22. Ivy says:

I really like Alexis and America’s pics – they’re great!

  23. maria says:

They should have done Katharine Hepburn.

I do like Alexis as Rosie though. That’s probably the best picture. I don’t like the way Emma Roberts has her feet. It looks kind of awkward.

  24. misscogito says:

they should have had janis joplin instead of some random hippie chicks. how were they american icons?
