Bart Simpson Is Promoting Scientology!

January 29th, 2009 by Evil Beet

Okay, okay, it’s not Bart Simpson. It’s Nancy Cartwright, who does the voice of Bart Simpson, leaving phone messages as Bart Simpson, trying to get people to attend some wacky Scientology event.

How is this legal????

Nancy Cartwright can’t possibly own the rights to the Bart character for this purpose. Or is there some exception made for religious groups?

  6. Hallie says:

I dunno, it’s her voice – you can’t really copyright a voice. It’s not like she used his image or anything. I don’t see a legal issue here.

  7. Heather says:

I think the only questionable part is when she actually says “This is Bart Simpson”. That might get her in trouble. Had she not said that and just used the voice, there probably would be no issue.

    /not a lawyer :)

  8. JorgeMacD says:

The Simpsons VAs have negotiated some pretty intense contracts for themselves, there’s no way of knowing WHAT they own at this point.

  9. How utterly, frothingly insane. Did the stupid cultist think she would get away with it? She must be as crimnially insane as heterosexual Tom Cruise.
