having worked in college radio for most of the 90s and into the 00s i feel compelled to note that juliana hatfield has had a very consistent output of albums over the years, rocking just as steadily as she did way back when. all that’s changed is that she stopped taking major label $ so she wouldn’t have to sing the songs they wanted hr to sing (the way liz phair did).

she hasn’t faded into obscurity, she’s just done what many artists with conviction do — they endure on their own and don’t worry about chasing the mythological dream of fame and stardom. how many of us are still doing the things we said we wanted to do back in high school or college?

Juliana Hatfield is the fucking best. I don’t really go in for woe-is-me what-the-hell-happened introspection, but I’ll make an exception for her.

I was a big fan of JH when I was in college, bought both her albums. She came to my university for a concert at the same time MTV was doing their fall launch from the campus. So they got her to play down by the lake the afternoon before the show. I met her and got an autograph. She had the cutest signature (just Juliana), in perfect cursive writing – like a 10 year old who’s practiced and practiced to get just right. I lost that autograph (which was still in my wallet) about a year later in a London taxi.

Oh, and the MTV kids on our campus? We took them back to our house and got them stoned. Bong-whipped John Sencio something terrible (John Ales was there too). Kennedy was knocking on the door and Sencio and Ales were like, “don’t let her in, she’s so annoying.” I think Sencio went to puke at that point, came back and started hitting on some dude. True story, every bit of it.

They still play her on 94.7, the alternative radio station in Portland. I heard her new single just the other day. She reminds me of a better time.

She played in Cleveland several years ago, and when she walked by me, I was totally starstruck. I remember seeing her videos on Alternative Nation like 15 years ago. Love love love her.

I figured it out!! It was on the soundtrack for Reality Bites! I was 12 when that movie came out. TWELVE!! I hate realizing on a daily basis that I’m getting old… :(
