R.I.P. David Foster Wallace

September 14th, 2008 by Evil Beet

On Wednesday, I made an obscure reference to Infinite Jest, which is probably the one and only time I’ve referenced the works of David Foster Wallace — a literary hero of mine — in the history of anything I’ve written ever.

On Friday, David Foster Wallace hung himself at his home in Claremont, California. He was 46.

Wallace is also the author of the brilliant Brief Interviews with Hideous Men, which was just made into a movie — directed by John Krasinski.

You were the best, dude. The best. I’m sorry you didn’t find what you were looking for.

WHAT!?!?! I echo Beet’s sentiments: You were without a doubt, the best. Infinite Jest is one of my favorite books, and like all things brilliant, it was too short. RIP David Foster Wallace, you will be greatly missed.

Hey baffled: my brother goes to your school, and David Foster Wallace was totally his hero….he was hoping to get into a class with him at some point. I know it hit him hard. I’m still in shock.

Beautifully put, Beet. This is terribly sad news for us all. DFW was one of the leading lights of his generation–a great artist and a great man.
