New “Clueless” Video Game to Teach Young Women How to Change Themselves to Land a Man

August 15th, 2008 by Evil Beet

Sigh.

I’m all about getting young women to use the computer, but hearing about the upcoming video game based on Clueless kind of made me vomit a little in my mouth.

The “Clueless” game will feature story elements from the hit comedy but takes its gameplay cues from “JoJo’s Fashion Show.” With protagonist Cher, played by Alicia Silverstone, being a fashion guru and a matchmaker, Marshall thought combining the two would work best. Thus, the player’s goal is to set up her various friends by dressing them in the style of the boyfriend they’re trying to attract.

“Not only will you be dressing up people specifically for cliquey boyfriends,” Marshall added, “but there are going to be events for each of these different dates, so we’re trying to echo the movie in the framework of the shopping, fashion and dress-up aspect.”

Dude, Clueless was funny because everyone knew it was a joke. Because it understood that its characters, their goals and their actions were abnormal and obnoxious. This video game appears, to me, to be sending all the same messages as Clueless, but without the obvious “Hey! We’re kidding!” thrown in there.

I mean, teaching young women to dress in the style of the men they’re trying to attract?

I hope “gigantic dildo” is one of the accessories.

I hate that so many video game companies are trying to “capitalize on the female market” by creating such stereotypical drivel. They spend so much time trying to figure out how to make a game for the typical airhead, that they completely ignore the real female fan base they have in the colorful, bright action adventure games that girls actually are drawn to.

This is so wrong on so many levels. It seems as though companies still haven’t gotten the point.

oh Beet, c’mon….that whole “vomit in my mouth a little” is just not a cool phrase anymore. Please tell me you’re not going to start using it a lot. I’ve read it on here twice in the past two days….

  4. Donkey Punch says:

Beet is old, you have to cut her a little slack for bringing up cliches :p

  5. B says:

I remember Alicia Silverston (and the other girl who played Cher on the series) being normal… as in: not ridiculously thin, having an atrociously long torso, nor the figure of a 10 year old boy.

That game looks a lot like the whole http://www.missbimbo.com thing, they just threw in ‘clueless’ to make it look like something ‘cool’.

    What would Danica McKellar say?

That game looks shitty but seriously, JoJo’s Fashion Show rocks!!!!! If you love fashion, it’s the funnest game. I was so excited when the sequel came out but was totally disappointed because it included men’s clothing. Who the fuck cares about men’s clothing?

  8. joan says:

i can see this being kinda fun though, like if they were to change the goal from landing a boyfriend to something cooler like getting into a certain clique’s party. like if you were a spy. “what kind of idiot outfit would you have to wear to get in to the football captain’s party”, “science club party”, “girls softball team party”, etc.

  9. Donkey Punch says:

Perhaps if Beet played the game she could catch a man?

  10. Hillary says:

    Donkey Punch…shut up.
I realize why donkey is in your name…because the word “donkey” is a synonym for “ass”.

Damn, couldn’t goad her into posting. Her comments are rather fun to read.

  12. Kitty says:

Had to giggle. Does anyone remember the Mystery Date game where you collected the cards and tried to snag the boyfriend behind the door? I even still remember the cheesy ads. Or maybe it was just a down under thing?

  13. jojo says:

Oh no, Kitty, it was stateside, too. I remember playing it with a neighbor girl who had all the “cool” games! I think I was in 2nd or 3rd grade at the time. haha… How appropriate!

Its not even that deep! Its a game where you put cloths together just like JoJo’s. If you like that kinda thing you’ll like the game. I’m sure the Clueless name is just about branding.
