WOW! What a crazy bunch of emotions this brings up for everyone, huh? Persistent Cat, you are sooooo right! About rehab not always being an option for the non-rich. My step dad is a REALLY bad alcoholic. He resently got out of a month & 1/2 long stay in the hospital, about 3 1/2 weeks in the ICU strapped down because the DT's were so bad & on a ventalater & feeding tube. Then just in the reg part of the hospital trying to get better. Then in the rehab to re-learn how to swallow, talk, sit up, walk & so on. We all wanted him to go to rehab after he got out. I don't think he was excited to go but he atleast agreed to go. And even WITH insurance (through the Army, he was enlisted for 26yrs) it was STILL gunna cost $200 a day!!! A DAY!! We (as a family) don't have that kind of money. So now he's just 'white knuckling' it & it's not going well. He's trying, but the desire, need, or whatever just seems so strong! After all that crap putting us & himself through ALL that, he still wants it. I don't understand. It makes me very sad, hurt & confused. Especially for my mom & sister (his daughter). I'm with ya Beet, I wish someone could come up with something to help the cravings or need or whatever!

I agree with MambaX, drug addicts and alcoholics lie and definitely don't let him in your house unless you want to come home and find all your stuff good and sold.

As for rehab, for the non-rich, it's sometimes not an option as treatment centres are expensive and not offered in every city.

Not a fan of misguided analogies. A man was put on the moon because very knowledgable people came together and made it happen. It's a clear science. Curing a human is an unclear science. It's not black and white.

consider the fact he may be lying when he says he was kicked out by the AA
I already told you they work on a different conciousness we do
drugs are nice, they make you feel good
the only way to escape is not trying them at all
believe me
don't give this guy access to your home
you'll regret it
he'll find social assistance solutions elsewhere
you'll find a lot of trouble if you give him shelter
look,I am not a nosy person
I don't really interfere in other people's lives
I am a doctor
I know how they operate
I know their ways

senor loco- you are missing the point. they do not love it more, they are addicted which means they are drawn to it whether they want it or not. it's very hard to stop, and since people (and drugs) are all different there are no easy answers.

Addiction cannot be cured, only controlled. There are addicts who are strong and then there's those who are weak. The weak ones almost nearly always fail in the end. Under all those layers of guilt, pain, and self-destruction, they love to be sedated more than anything else in the world and they're not willing to change. While most might would never admit it to even themselves, they love the high even more than their family and friends. And the longer they accommodate their addictions, the more they are able to justify it in their own minds. I not certain as to whether it should be labeled a disease, but it's definitely a form of mental illness or instability.

@ MW:
Addiction is considered a disease because it changes brain chemistry. Not because of insurance purposes, jackass!

Beet: It's hard to come up with a solution for everyone because different drugs trigger different pleasure receptors in the brain--hence no cure-all for everyone. But stay encouraged: researchers really are seeking ways to block substances from being activated in a way to not only prevent addiction, but the devastating effects it can have on families and communities. Comments by MW show just how little the public at large knows about addiction.

Beet the big thing about addiction is the person has to have the desire to stop drinking or doing drugs. People go into treatment for alot of reasons (to keep a job, etc.) but have no intension of quitting.

This is why you should never be stupid enough to take drugs in the first place. PS, addiction is only classified as a disease so that insurance will cover its treatment.

Dealing with this sh!t now with a family member and I can tell you that the rehab system (at least for heroin addicts) is broken. People want to get clean but are turned away at the door and told to come back in a week when there is room. Well I can tell you, he's not going to make it a week from now.

Regarding my comment on the other post (about Lohan staying clean): Sorry if I sounded overly harsh. Clearly, I don't know you or your friend personally. I was speaking from personal experience (not as the addict), and I have been burned before, so I guess I am a bit jaded.

I wasn't suggesting that you shouldn't care and try to help your friend, but was alarmed at the prospect of your inviting him to stay with you. I didn't want to see our Beet get hurt, so I was really being pushy.

While I understand that people on intoxicants are turned away to protect the others at meetings, it feels wrong somehow. How are they supposed to stop getting high, if they can't get help when they are high? But, not to be flippant, they probably wouldn't let a guy with a bag of jelly donuts, or even an empty DnD bag, into an Overeaters Anonymous meeting, so as to not trigger the other participants.

All that being said, I am truly sorry that he, and by extension, you are going through this. You are obviously a very caring person, and this is a painful situation. I wish you both peace.
