Fun with YouTube: The Refreshments, “Banditos”

June 7th, 2008 by Evil Beet

Oh, man.

So I’ve been checking out some of the public playlists on my Rhapsody account. One of them was called, like, “Hits of the 90s” or something like that. It has about 150 songs on it. I’m obsessed with this playlist. It’s phenomenal. This song just came on, and I was like “HOLY SHIT THIS SONG ROCKS!!!” I’d totally forgotten about it.

Other little forgotten gems on the list:

Ben Folds, “Brick”
Blind Melon, “No Rain”
BoDeans, “Closer to Free”
Goo Goo Dolls, “Slide”
Hole, “Malibu”
Cake, “Short Skirt Long Jacket”
Marcy Playground, “Sex and Candy”
R.E.M., “Man on the Moon”
Sarah McLachlin, “Adia”
Sheryl Crow, “Strong Enough”
Soundgarden, “Black Hole Sun”
The Verve Pipe, “The Freshmen”
Weezer, “Buddy Holly”
New Radicals, “You Get What You Give”
Jane’s Addiction, “Jane Says”
Third Eye Blind, “Semi-charmed Life”

OMG you guys there’s just too many to list.

I feel like I’m in high school again!!!

My favorite 90’s one-hit wonder will ALWAYS be “Bittersweet Symphony,” by the Verve. That song is fucking genius. I’m getting chills right now just thinking about it.

    I’ve got some tips:

    Spin Doctors – Two Princes
Deep Blue Something – Breakfast at Tiffany’s
Atomic Swing – Smile / Stone Me Into the Groove
    This Perfect Day – Fishbowl / It’s a Shame
The Wannadies – You and Me Song / Shorty
    White Town – Your Woman

What about 4 Non Blondes? I have most of these songs on my computer already. I, too, like being reminded of my high school years. Makes me feel young again…

  4. Donkey Punch says:

Once again this post should start with the words: ADVERTISEMENT.

  5. Meg says:

i think i have that EXACT list on a cd i found in my brother’s old room the other day

  6. woohoo says:

Why does Donkey Punch come on here every post and just bitch? I don’t get it. Seems like a charmed life

  7. Anonymous says:

Every party needs a pooper and that’s why we invited him.

  8. Yum says:

It’s way to soon to get naustalgic over these songs. Donkey, the nip slips are gone, move on, move on. What a bitter critter.

  9. Spiteful Lars says:

The whole Refreshments album is solid from ‘96. Think it’s called “bigger, buzzy, fresh and fuzzy” or something.

  10. slouchy says:

    Hiya, Spiteful Lars.

  11. Donkey Punch says:

    > Donkey, the nip slips are gone, move on, move on.

Lol, I don’t care about the nip slips you perv.

Where are all the stories that other celeb sites are posting about? Instead all we get lately are stories about Beet’s dog or barely disguised advertisements. Enough about Beet’s period or bowel movements. More celebs.

  12. Richard III says:

Presumably, we read beet-beet not because she’s rehashing content found elsewhere, but because of her unique take (her acerbic shiny-steel wit wrapped in, dare I say it, an intelligent and attractive woman) on what she sees. We wouldn’t want her to just make stuff up, then she’d be the Onion.

Therefore, while we like to read about celebs, and her views on them; many of us like to also hear about her life in general and her cute dog. Her spin on things is the important content.

Also, I don’t think she’s advertising here. She was just stating where she saw this stuff so others could/might go check it out.

    Chill, Winston. Chill.

    Still luv ya funky touch!

  14. jennatar says:

Oh, the Refreshments? They did the King of the Hill theme, right?

I’d like to just step in and say that the Romeo + Juliet and Empire Records soundtracks both pretty much clear up whatever lingering 90s nostalgia I had. And don’t forget anything by the Cranberries. Or “Wonderwall,” that’s pretty iconic too. OK, I’m done.

  15. Asta says:

I still listen to most of those bands. =)

  16. melk says:

dude you’d totally dig my ipod

  17. Melissa says:

I thought of another goody for ya, Beeters: How Soon is Now by the Smiths. Everyone’s heard it like a billion times, but you never know who sings it.

And wow, it’s been like eleven years since that Romeo + Juliet soundtrack came out, but I still listen to it all the time. That’s how I got into Radiohead.

  18. Ernestine says:

Melissa — I LOVE that soundtrack! That Garbage song is really, really sexy. Um, it is. Really. And I have a weakness for the Cardigans, too, and I LOVE that Mundy song — “To You I Bestow.” The Des’ree song is gorgeous, too. And I love that Butthole Surfers song, too. And the name Butthole Surfers. WhatEVer, that whole fucking album is good, and Baz Luhrmann’s version of the movie was genius, too.

Dude, the nineties kinda ruled. Remember Bill Clinton? *ssssiiigh.*
