OMG, Beet. This is my exact situation right now. Except my next door neighbor is a pimp and I hate the mom of the 12 kids that roam around so much that I can’t force myself to care about their well being.

Sounds a bit like what I deal with every weekend, there are kids around my house who are always unsupervised, running amok all over the grounds, but somehow they all end up at my house, calling me “Mom” and looking all parched and hungry. So I stock up on grocery store brand diet caffeine free soda and chips and popsicles and send them on their way with a little something. It’s tragic that people don’t care more about their kids – and these parents are usually at home just ignoring their kids. You did a good thing Beet – you sacrificed when you were in a bad place too.

There are kids like that all across the country – I called them street urchins where I used to live. CPS would be (even more) overwhelmed if they tried to fix all the less-than-ideal homes, & frankly they don’t try. If the children speak of physical/sexual abuse or show visible signs of it, if they are being left home alone at night or for extended periods, you call CPS.

Otherwise, you do what the Beet did – what you can.

ok. must of been hard though. Hope they are okay now… as 11 or 12 yr olds. That is just the saddest story. I bet when you have your children one day (infact, you will feel this way) you will be sickened how any one can just let their 3 year old wander around… and this was just 8 years ago. yikes. like your site. thanks for claryifying

It did occur to us to call CPS, many times. We agonized over it. But the kids weren’t being abused, just kind of neglected, and I tend to be of the opinion that, in the absence of physical or sexual abuse, kids are better off with their parents than thrown into the foster care system. So in the end we decided not to call.
