Nickelodeon Considering Airing Special About How Not to Get Knocked Up at 16

This is fabulous.
Nickelodeon is considering airing a special about sex and love after news broke that Zoey 101 skipped out on Sex Ed.
For the special, Nickelodeon confirmed it’s talking with Linda Ellerbee, the veteran newswoman who has stepped in frequently in the past with shows on talking to children about difficult issues in the news. “I think it’s important that something be done,” Ellerbee told The Associated Press on Thursday. “But I think it’s important that it be done in a measured way, and not just to feed the beast of news stories.
I actually think this is pretty cool of Nickelodeon. It’s definitely important these issues be addressed with its young audience, since this country is kidding itself if it thinks its tweens aren’t doing the nasty.

Why don’t they just air the Trojan “When Pigs Fly” commercial?
First off, I never like the Linda special Nick news things anyway. When I was a kid, I hated them. Give me cartoons or give me death was how I felt about it. I just find it soooooo funny that Nick is doing a special now that Jamie Lynn Spears is pregnant. Teen pregnancy has been an issue for years (especially in the African American community…I’m African American). Where was the special when Beyonce’s sister got pregnant? I know she isn’t a Nick star, but still…. I commend Nick for trying to be proactive about the situation, but I think pulling Linda out of the basement is the last thing that’s gonna help. Let the parents talk to the kids…..
I also commend Nickolodeon for planning a “sex ed special”, but will it even help? I graduated from high school last year and I can’t count the number of times that abstinence, condoms, pills, std’s, etc.; warnings were pounded into my head and all the other kids in my school! Girls STILL got pregnant and people STILL got STDs, so in reality, DOES IT EVEN HELP? Or is Nick just trying to fill “on air” space?
I think that parents should be the ones to talk to their kids. But the truth is, lots of parents just don’t. They would rather avoid the issue by letting their 16 year old daughter have a live-in boyfriend then have a serious talk about safe sex and contraception, just like lots of parents would rather buy their kids alcohol and let them drink at home than have a serious talk about drinking and driving.
I’m glad Nickolodeon is airing a special and yes, I remember the old ones when I was a kid, and I did think they were boring at the time. But if parents won’t talk to their kids, then who will? These kinds of shows are supposed to get kids asking their parents, or a school counselor or a teacher or even each other about these things which to me does more than this dark-ages approach we have towards kids and sex in America.
