Sounds like the stagehands just got extremely frustrated after months of no response. Yes it's really bad for the others involved--I have a friend in a play in NY just cooling his heels right now because of this-- but a strike is meant to be an extreme action to provoke some kind of resolution. Let's hope the resolution happens soon. There are holiday specific shows, like my friend's production of "Grinch that Stole Christmas." Actors don't get paid when they don't work...many live paycheck to paycheck.. New York is a very expensive place to live and this is hitting at the worst time. This union, by giving no notice allowed hundreds of people to spend good money to travel to New York just to see the shows go dark. They walked out at 10am before a 2pm show. I am a proud member of the AFL-CIO and I support the struggle to be sure that we are paid for our work...however I don't support those who strike and don't think of the consequences of who it will hurt. Both the WGA and Local 1 need to figure this out before more people lose their jobs. Shutting down Broadway means a horrible holiday season for many people. Not just the tourists that go see the shows but the people whose paychecks are now being held for weeks until this comes to a conclusion.
