I see alot of people feel threatened by Beth Ditto’s confidence. Since Beth doesn’t apologize for who she is (fat AND lesbian? – oh my god! call the police!), people find her threatening and want her to hide in the background feeling bad about herself. As for her becoming sporty, have you ever seen Beth on stage? I guess not.

I also find it interesting how folks, including doctors, criticize Beth for promoting obesity. She is constantly criticized for her weight, which is in fact unhealthy, yet people have no problem worshiping celebrities who are publicly alcoholic, smoke cigarettes, use drugs, party and abuse their bodies, etc. But because Beth’s weight can’t be hidden like a smoking or drug habit, she’s an easy target.

I’m sure most of you preachers of health here probably drink alcohol, smoke cigarettes and use drugs, oh holy & healthier-than-thou! Hypocrites.

I am what you’d call a ‘big’ girl but I’m also 6 foot tall. I have tried diet after diet. I run, kick box and do my yoga every day but here I am, still heavy…and that’s ok. When it’s not ok is when there are major health concerns and the EMTs have to take a wall out of your house to get you to the ER. I do find it funny tho, the stigma of being fat is worse than that of a girl who is dying because she hasn’t eaten in a month. Anyone remember Marilyn Monroe? She’d be considered plus size today.

Ditto, SHOULD she wear what she does? IMO? No. But let’s be real, main stream doesn’t see her much so no one is going to give a damn about it. Until an article like this comes along and then it inflames everyone. She is either craving attention(any attention, good or bad) or she really thinks she looks good in what she’s wearng. Skinny celebs have fashion consultants…maybe Beth needs to hire one.

I soooo agree with you. Making the apology of obesity is like making the apology of anorexia. There’s no difference between both unhealthy eating disorder.
I like to compare this brune singer to another one, andrea corr. She is very slim, skinny, since she was very young. She’s very tin and small, and slim. But not in an unhealthy, anorexic way. And she’s beautiful. Really, between both singer, who would I prefer to look like ? Andrea corr, of corrs ! No really, this is disgusting. Beth ditto is so uncomfortable with her weight that she’s always pretending being okay with it. If it was the case, she wouldn’t felt the need to always show it to the world, it would come naturly, which obviously is not the case. And that’s a shame cos beth really is cute. Why on earth does she think she’s better than normal weight girls cos she’s fat ? Being fat does not make you nicer. It’s unhealthy and that’s all. That doen’t prove anything. I would show respect to her if instead of claiming she’s okay like that, she ‘d admitt it would never be the case and she take her life in her hand for good and decide to loose weight just for her health, it’s not a question of being beautiful or not, that she already is. It’s a question of not showing to fat teenage girls the wrong example, claiming you can feel well like that and later they’ll discover this is not true.

I prefer to take andrea as a model for what is being slim in a healthy way.

ok, why is it that large women cant be sexy? i think Beth Ditto is an amazing role model for larger girls because she shows them confidence and that they can be sexy and wear what they want and feel beautiful wearing it. plus, her band is awesome. Beth Ditto is giving a huge “fuck you” to the world by saying “look, im fat and im proud of it, i dont give a fuck what you say because i know im beautiful from the inside out!” that why i respect her to the fullest. and all of you people saying she’s disgusting and ugly just because she’s big, are assholes and shallow.

dude, i totally agree with you. (im not trying to put myself down here but) im fat. not as big as beth here but i know im fat. i agree that we (fat ppl) shouldn’t be wearing really tight and tiny clothes! shes Gross!!
i understand women who are trying to promote the “real” look not the sick anorexic body look, but she’s obese! idk if she is, but to me, she’s promoting the obesity. its disgusting!! its horrible. americans should be looking at a healthy way of life, not a disgusting,portly life.

A lot of opinions will be heard, a lot of comments will be written. Each person has their own point of view. And each of them, surprisingly has correct bits and pieces. The only case I will agree with on the ‘being fat is not right’ thingy is that since Beth Ditto rocks and is a celeb, many young teens who like her music and follow her and have a serious overweight problem might consider it ‘okay’. I don’t mind if they consider it ok beauty-wise. Beauty is relative. But health? Just think about health. Other than that, Beth should be left alone, I love what she does. But ‘promoting’ fatness is wrong. As well as promoting many other things is wrong. Fat though, it can lead to health problems. I’ve been overweight and I know that. Well I didn’t have any serious conflicts, thankfully, but my little cousin who’s only 10 years old has serious cholesterol and diabetes problems just because of the cheese and choco amounts she consumes. And, by the way, she likes Beth Ditto and when she saw her on MTV she said oh cool, I don’t need to lose weight in that case. Don’t forgert she’s 10. Doctor said she must take care of her diet. Just allow me to say what I said for good. Other than that The Gossip fucking rules. It’s only how people promote certain things that bothers me sometimes, which on the case of Beth I don’t how of how much accurate it is, if she promotes clothing or just her weight. I find her voice awesome though. Don’t know what else I’d add up. That’s pretty much it for now. x
