Okay, people: Fidel Castro is not dead and Beth Ditto is not sexy.
Look. I get what she’s trying to do.
She’s a lesbian (although she’s dating a transgendered “boyfriend”). She’s an outspoken feminist. She’s fighting for gay rights. And that’s all okay with me. In fact, I think it’s great.
But she’s really fat. And I guess what she’s trying to do is demonstrate that big is beautiful. Big is sexy. Big girls can wear small shorts.
But you know what?
No.
Sorry, but no.
And I’m sorry if people think I’m setting back the women’s rights movement like 100 years, but no one likes to see a fat chick in shorts like that. And it’s not healthy. And it’s not smart. And obesity is an epidemic in this country and while I’m all about sending the message that it’s okay to be gay and it’s okay to be an outspoken woman and it’s okay to deviate from the norm, I’m not about sending the message that your BMI can be equivalent to your height in inches and that’s okay.

I agree totally with this article. In fact, I could’ve written it.
Sure, it’s great that she’s gay/doesn’t shave her armpits stuff like that. Shows that she doesn’t care what people think of her. But being fat is not something to be proud of. Obesity is a /health condition/. YOU ARE FAT BECAUSE YOU EAT TOO MUCH. I’m going to get totally bashed for this comment, but it’s true. If you have a slower metabolism than others, then you have to control your eating a bit more. You should know how to take care of your body.
And another thing I’m really sick of is all the skinny-bashing. Saying that very skinny people are anorexic. Believe it or not, some people are actually born very thin.
And before someone jumps down my throat, no, no one is born obese.
I’m not saying everyone has to be below a size 10, don’t be stupid.
If you have a bit of extra baggage, who cares.
But obesity like Beth Ditto is just wrong.
People comparing obesity to being gay/a certain race is absolutely ridiculous. You can’t do anything about your race, or your sexuality. You can, however, control your weight.
And, when it all comes down to it, obese people can argue all they want.

I don’t think you can generalise the whole of the overweight population, and sure, she doesn’t look what is accapted as beautiful and I’m not going to lie and say I think that’s an appropriate outfit for someone of her size, but at least she IS confident and is showing people who perhaps aren’t as confident not to be ashamed. And stuff it, she is like that, what do you want her to do, hide in a cave?

I am a lesbian who has struggled with my weight all of my life. I went from a size 16 (American) to a size 4, and in order to keep that weight off, I have to eat healthy. My blood pressure and cholesterol are extremely healthy. I have been through all of these issues with losing weight, and when it boils down to the basics, the issue is not society forcing you to eat and nature plotting against you–it’s you and your willpower.
Beth Ditto has taken up a position as a poster girl for gay rights and for fat rights. Both of these positions are not suited to her – she is trying to convey the message that obesity is a valid life choice. Obesity is dangerous, and has serious mental and physical health implcations for the person concerned.
Since championing obesity, she has also become a lesbian poster girl. As a lesbian, I feel that we need to have a ‘poster girl’ who does not conform to the overweight, tattooed, in-your-face lesbian stereotype. Beth Ditto must be stopped! I vote Jodie Foster to replace her. Whos with me?

i’m a healthy weight and i have never been fat so i guess i can’t know what it’s like to be huge, but the majority of fat people are not healthy. it is possible to be fat and healthy but those fat and healthy people are those rare beautiful fat people.

Sure, that can be part of it, but it’s really something else entirely, isn’t it? Sexy is often completely subjective, and in my opinion, has more to do with self confidence than appearance. I’m absolutely blown away that someone can state that they don’t respect fat people…because they’re fat. I’ve met many brilliant people, some of them fat, and I respect them for their intelligence, integrity, humanity. Broad generalizations are dangerous. And I can’t help but think of my size 2 friend who eats all the “wrong” things (sometimes in great quantities) and drinks sugary cocktails many nights a week but doesn’t gain an ounce–just because her poor diet isn’t evident in her size doesn’t mean she’s healthy. But hey, she’s happy and I love her dearly and that’s what counts in the end–we’re all dying, some of us will simply discover our mortality sooner than the rest.

Generally, I believe people’s weight should be their own issue. This woman is putting herself out there on purpose. Those clothes are not appropriate for any size person to wear. I’m not a prude. I’m not modest, I am very comfortably with nudity, but I feel that dressing provocatively is a way of drawing attention to oneself. It’s obvious to me when a person is dressing to please themself or dressing to get ‘negative’ attention from others. This woman is not healthy, but that is her own issue. Our growing obesity rate is a big problem, and so is being underweight. Both are hard to fix. Regardless, people come in all shapes and sizes, and the world would be a better place if people would accept that, and not make such a big deal about it. However, Beth Ditto most likely would benefit from medical attention, a better diet and a good exercise regime. If she values her health, she will get some help, if not for herself, for the people who like her music. Heathy people generally live longer, and being big and HEALTHY would be a good example for people, given that she is somewhat of a role model, as are all people in the media, whether they like it or not.

I’ve been fat and obese since puberty (and not before) and I eat just, if not less and better, as my thin friends. but I have a chronic diseas called policystic ovaries that causes me to be fat and to be unfertile. and it’s not curable by just taking a pill. in fact, I think it’s not curable at all. I can loose weight, I can weight 75-80 kilos with diet and gym, but under that I can’t fisically go. you get it now? I can’t wear most of the clothes out there, I can’t run, I can’t sit on my boyfriend lap, and I can’t have babies.
so please, please, please: for once try to think that not everybody are the same, that it’s not our choice to be obese. and that our lifes are already a struggle without you moralist morons keep telling us it’s our fault.

I was highly dissapointed by the tone which this article fell into. It started out with one persons opinion had some interesting discussions on medical obesity and then descended into kids hurling insults at each other.
Can I point out that the young lady in question probably couldn’t care less what we all think and would be foolish if she did. However as we live in this very odd celebrity obsessed world we feel justified to make comments about anyone, Yes she is wearing short shorts, I know some men that wear shorts that small and some very slim women that do, some don’t look as good as others but if they like it, why complain.
The only difference with a celebrity is the fact they know that people will notice and at times play up to the camera and to get a reaction. She may have a lot to say but why is the young lady considered more of a hero than say someone’s gran who fought in a war.

So. I do enjoy the Gossip’s music. And I think its really cool that she is comfortable with herself and that she is showing that bigger people can be talented and awesome too. I am a bit chubby myself, and so this all makes me feel slightly better. HOWEVER; she is in her underwear. Sometimes she even strips to her bra. That is not good in my standards. I don’t enjoy seeing skinny people half naked, so its not just that its not aesthetically pleasing, it has to do with class. Unfortunately she is not showing any in this picture. She does have an amazing voice, and I admire her in a lot of ways. But I would most definitely prefer her to be clothed.
